Safety Planning

When planning for your safety you need to think about three things:

  • Anticipated Events (What do you think may happen?)
  • Proactive Steps (What could you do to prevent this from happening?)
  • Reactive Steps (What will you do if anything happens?)

Use the example on the left to help you plan for your own safety. The Peel Committee against Woman Abuse (www.pcawa.ca) has a more complete version of this planning guide on their website. It may also be downloaded as a PDF file and is available in several languages other than English.

Example of Safety Planning

Anticipated Events (What do you think may happen?)

He / She may come to my apartment

He / She may threaten me

He / She start fighting and arguing with me

  • He / She may stalk me
  • He / She may kill me
  • He / She may follow me

Proactive Steps (What could you do to prevent this from happening?)

  • Let my neighbours know that if they hear yelling or screaming to call police
  • Keep doors closed and locked at all times
  • Stay in public areas
  • Stay in well lite areas if out at night
  • Put an extra phone in the bathroom
  • Put at least one lock on bathroom door
  • Make friends and be with them if you are out at all times
  • Never go to the bathroom alone if you are out
  • Know who is around you
  • Get more locks on doors and windows
  • Check locks every night – routine

Reactive Steps (What will you do if anything happens?)

  • Call 911
  • Yell “FIRE” not “help”
  • Go into the bathroom and lock door
  • Tell someone to call 911
  • Stay where people are
  • Make noise
  • Try not to panic

The Salvation Army Family Life Resource Centre (FLRC) is an emergency short term shelter in the Brampton area for women and their children escaping partner violence.
